Kohfeldt reflects on loss to Wolfsburg

Florian Kohfeldt believes that losing Sargent was the biggest reason why they lost their game against Wolfsburg last weekend.

After losing Josh Sargent in their pre-game workouts with an ankle injury, the Werder Bremen has lost a game for the first time in the last five matches. That 5-3 blow by Wolfsburg proved to be a strong loss, and coach Florian Kohfeldt claimed that Sargent’s presence is very important.

The USA international striker is clearly an important piece for Werder’s success this season, and that means a lot for the team if they are going to stay alive at the end of the run. Sargent was crucial in the team’s first eight games, and it looked as if they could make a tight push in the campaign soon enough.

Sargent injured his ankle the morning before the game as the team went on with their pre-match exercises. The striker’s absence meant a big blow for the club, and it is clear that they are missing Sargent’s offensive touch. Kohfeldt knows that Sargent played a big role in the team’s offensive rhythm, and they need him to stay alive in the 2020-21 season.

“He just went over on his ankle”, Kohfeldt said of Sargent’s injury. “He’ll return to training at some time in the middle of the week. I’m not sure whether he’ll be able to train on Monday, but it won’t rule him out of our next game against Stuttgart”.

Bet on Wolfsburg’s next game

The 20-year-old was replaced by Yuya Osako in the lineup, and Sargent was only able to watch from the sidelines as his team got hammered by Wolfsburg at every end of the pitch. Werder did start brightly against the Wolves, but they failed to answer back well to at least tie the game at the end of the final horn.

At the final whistle, Kohfeldt believes that Sargent is clearly the most important player he has and it seems that they were lucky enough to know that the striker’s injury isn’t that much serious.

“I’m happy Josh doesn’t have a serious injury”, said Kohfeldt. “But you could see just what he brings to our game. Without wanting to criticise Yuya Osako in the slightest, as he had a very good game, but Josh is obviously able to bring a bit more physicality out on the pitch, while still remaining dangerous up front”.

Werder ended the game with a tough loss, but then they know that winning won’t mean much if they can’t get their best player back. After all, Kohfeldt knows that having Sargent means winning big and getting a better chance of keeping their pace.

“That’s why his absence really hurt us and it’s the biggest compliment you can pay him, that you could really notice that he wasn’t there”, said Kohfeldt.

Werder needs to bounce back from this loss, and that means getting Sargent back as soon as they can.
