Chelsea Unlikely to Qualify for Champions League Say Bookies

Chelsea wobbling in the Premier League and the bookies now quote odds-against that the Blues make the top four this season.

When Chelsea beat Leeds United 3-1 on 5 December, everyone was talking about Frank Lampard’s team challenging Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, although things have really gone awry in the past few weeks and the Blues now face a struggle to claim a top four spot this season.

Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City on Sunday means that Chelsea have racked up just four points from six games played in the English top flight and the London side now sit eighth in the table with just twenty-six points on the board from seventeen games played.

What Has Gone Wrong at Chelsea FC?

Obviously, whenever a team win a football match, their opponents inevitably lose and perhaps Chelsea have fallen foul of the fact that Arsenal started to rally when playing the Blues, while City were also tricky opponents, although the Blues’ poor run started with defeats away to Everton and Wolves.

Chelsea are now three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham having played a game more, with Lampard struggling to find his best Starting 11 and there is a massive issue by virtue of the fact that Timo Werner is struggling badly for goals this season.

Lampard played Werner as the central striker of a front three against Manchester City with Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic either side of him, although they offered little attacking threat, while the defence was consistently undone by City’s attacking wizardry.

Chelsea Could Fail to Land Top Four Spot

According to the bookies, Chelsea are now more likely to qualify for the Europa League than the Champions League next season. The Blues are 13/10 with 888sport on their top four betting market, having continued to drift throughout December as a succession of points have been dropped to leave their title hopes being practically non-existent.

An 888sport spokesman told BetX.com: “Chelsea were single figure odds for the title a month ago and we saw plenty of interest at the prices. Lampard looked to have a nice blend of attacking football although their form has gone off a cliff.

“We now expect the Blues to struggle in their quest to become a cemented top four team and it will be interesting whether Roman Abramovich is patient with Lampard considering the history that the pair share.”
